Moving to a new house is a major milestone for any person, particularly for new homeowners. We want your move to be as smooth as possible, so we have constructed a list of the best tips to consider when packing before a move; So, read on to find out more!
1. Get Someone to Help You
Instead of facing the daunting idea of packing by yourself, get a friend or family member to give you a hand. If you are a family moving together, it might also be a good way to get the kids involved and excited about moving. You will also find that it’s a lot less boring, and you’ll get the job done quicker!
2. Create a Checklist
There’s no better feeling than being organised. A simple checklist makes a world of difference and can put your mind at ease, particularly when things get stressful. This will also ensure that you don’t forget anything and have a clear plan for what you need to do in the run-up to the move. You can also make a checklist for all of the major belongings you need to have packed up and ready to go.
3. Have a Clear Out
Moving gives you the perfect opportunity to give your stuff a good clear out. Before packing away anything, consider getting rid of anything you don’t want or use anymore. You could either donate unwanted belongings to a charity shop or even sell some of it at a car boot sale! There are many different options you can explore which mean your stuff doesn’t go to waste and will likely be valued by someone else.
4. Pack by Room
Tackling the packing by each room can make the process a lot easier, especially if you are feeling overwhelmed. Sort out the rooms with the most stuff in first and then the rest will feel much easier. You will also find it easier to unpack at your new home as most of your items will be boxed by room so everyone can unpack their own stuff.
5. Label Boxes
To stop any confusion, clearly label all of your boxes. Once your boxes have been unloaded at the new property you will be able to unpack very easily if you know where everything is. For example, if one of your boxes is labelled ‘kitchenware’ you will know exactly where to go if you need plates, bowls etc. and so forth.
6. Don’t Over Pack
Someone will have to carry your moving boxes at some point so make sure it is actually possible to lift them! It is advised that your boxes shouldn’t weigh more than 20kg as this will make it very difficult for either yourself or your removal company to comfortably load and unload the boxes. Spread the weight out across different boxes and you will be surprised at the big difference this makes.
7. Be Careful with Fragile Items
Using bubble wrap and other protective materials you should ensure that all delicate items such as plates and glasses are properly wrapped up and ready to go. You don’t want to arrive at your new property only to find that these items have smashed during transportation.
8. Double Check for Missing Stuff
Once everything is packed up, we would advise going through every single room again to check that you haven’t missed anything. It’s so easy to miss things, especially if the items are small or you don’t use them often. Be on the lookout for things that have fallen down somewhere or might be hidden.
9. Pack a Small Box of Essentials
The worst thing you can do is get to the new property and wonder where you put your essentials, which are likely to be in one of the many boxes you have packed up. The best way to get around this is to pack your essentials into one box before you get to the new property and make sure you take this with you in your own vehicle. This will allow you to easily access any of the vital items you need such as your wallet, phone, keys and perhaps even the kettle if you want to make a cup of tea as soon as you arrive.
10. Or Get Your Removal Company to Do the Packing!
Why not hire your removal company to take care of the packing? Rather than spending hours of your day getting everything ready for the move, many removal companies offer a packing service that takes all of that stress away from you. The packing team will make their way to your current property in the run-up to the move and get the job done, using high quality moving boxes and packing materials, to ensure your belongings are kept safe and secure.
